About Kitchen Cabinets
What it covers, what sets the price
Kitchen cabinets are the most expensive and longest-used furniture in the home; because they are made to measure they cannot be swapped like ready-made furniture, and their flaws stand in front of you for years. The quality of the job is read on three levels: the carcass material and thickness, the door type (melamine, membrane, lacquer, acrylic) and the hardware (hinges, runners, drawer system). The unseen carcass and hardware determine the price as much as the visible door. In Turkey kitchen cabinets are priced per metre; base units, wall units and tall units are calculated separately, and the worktop is usually a separate item. Measurements, plumbing points and built-in appliances must be settled before production; production takes two to four weeks and installation takes a few days. - 01Have the carcass thickness and material written into the quote; an 18 mm melamine-faced chipboard carcass is the common standard.
- 02Choose the door type according to how the kitchen is used; in a kitchen with a lot of damp and steam, membrane and lacquer differ in durability.
- 03It is the type of hinge and runner that matters, not the brand: ask for soft-close hinges and full-extension drawer runners.
- 04Finalise the dimensions of the built-in appliances and the plumbing points before production.
- 05Split the payment into three: after measuring, after production and after installation; make the final payment once the door adjustments are done.

They removed the old kitchen in Gürsu and built a new one. Removal, fitting and the worktop were included in the price; nothing was added afterwards. The cabinet interiors are lined too and the edge banding is thick. Three months in, no sagging doors.

What is the difference between melamine, membrane, lacquer and acrylic doors?
A melamine (laminate) door is the most economical; flat-surfaced, scratch-resistant, edge-banded. A membrane door is MDF wrapped in PVC foil; embossed and profiled patterns are possible, but the foil can lift with steam. A lacquer door is MDF with paint and varnish applied; it comes matt or gloss, looks the most elegant, can scratch and repairing it takes skill. An acrylic door gives a high gloss and is expensive. How heavily the kitchen is used and the budget decide.
Is the worktop included in the price?
In most quotes, no; the worktop is a separate item and its price varies a lot by material (laminate, quartz, granite, marble, compact). The cabinet maker can supply the worktop themselves, or you make a separate arrangement with a worktop supplier. The worktop is measured after the cabinets are installed and takes a few days to produce; during this period the kitchen is without a worktop. Ask clearly in the quote whether the worktop is included and who will fit it.
How long do production and installation take, and how long is the kitchen out of use?
After the measurements and drawing are approved, production takes two to four weeks; during this time you carry on using your old kitchen. On installation day the old cabinets are removed and the new ones fitted; it takes one to three days. If the worktop is produced separately, it is measured after installation and there is a wait of a few more days. The period when the kitchen is actually unusable is generally around a week; it gets longer if there is plumbing and tiling work too.
Can I replace just the doors without having the old cabinets removed?
If the carcass is sound, has not taken in damp and you like the layout, yes; renewing only the doors, handles and hinges makes a clear difference and is far cheaper. But if the carcass has swollen, the shelves are sagging or the layout is going to change, replacing the doors is a waste of money. Also, the carcass dimensions must exactly match the new door sizes, and the hinge holes must be in the same place. The cabinet maker sees the carcass at the site visit and decides.
