Tiling is the most durable covering for wet or heavily used areas such as bathrooms, kitchens, balconies and hallways. Labour is priced per square metre, but what really determines the price is the condition of the floor, the size of the tiles and whether the old covering has to be removed. Good tiles cannot be laid on an uneven floor; screed or levelling is the hidden item in most jobs. In the Turkish market, ceramic and porcelain tiles, adhesive classes and grout types offer a wide range of quality; knowing them lets you compare quotes properly. Can new tiles be laid over old tiles?
If the old covering is sound, not loose and the rise in floor level will not be a problem, tiles can be laid over it with a suitable adhesive; you save the cost of removal and rubble. However, the gap under doors narrows, there is a step at thresholds and if there is a hidden leak underneath it gets covered over unseen. In a bathroom it carries a risk because the waterproofing will not be renewed. The general rule: possible in dry areas, better to remove in wet areas.
What is the difference between porcelain and ceramic tiles?
Porcelain tiles are fired at a higher temperature; they are harder, absorb less water and withstand frost. Porcelain is preferred on floors, balconies and outdoors. Ceramic is enough for walls and is more economical; it is also easier to cut. Cutting porcelain needs a special disc and stretches the labour slightly; with large-format porcelain the floor must be very flat. Ceramic for the walls and porcelain for the floor is a sensible balance for most homes.
How wide should the grout joint be and which grout should be used?
With rectified tiles, meaning tiles with straightened edges, a narrow joint of up to two millimetres is possible; with ordinary tiles three to five millimetres is common. A very narrow joint shows up size differences and leaves no room for the tile to move. For the filling, a cement-based product is economical; in the shower area and behind the kitchen worktop an epoxy-based grout is far more resistant to darkening and staining, but its price and labour are higher.
When can I use a newly tiled bathroom?
For the adhesive to set, the floor should not be walked on for at least a day after laying; the grout should not see water for one to two days after application. With epoxy grout this period depends on the product, and the tiler will tell you. You also need to wait a day for the silicone in the shower area to cure. In short, waiting two days after the final grouting and then starting to use the bathroom normally is a safe plan.
