A bathroom renovation is the most complex job done in the smallest space in the home: plumbing, waterproofing, screed, tiling, electrics and installation all work in turn on the same few square metres. That is why a bathroom job should be thought of not as a single service but as three separate scopes: a cosmetic refresh where the tiles stay, a full renovation where the tiles are removed, and a full renovation including plumbing where the pipes are renewed too. Quotes taken before the scope is settled cannot be compared. Time and price divide sharply along these three lines; the material segment and the size of the bathroom come on top. Below you will find the steps between demolition and silicone, the things you need to decide at each step, the traps that stretch the schedule and the questions to ask at the site visit. In an apartment building, rubble removal hours, the water shut-off plan and informing the neighbours are small but important details that affect the calendar too. We had a 5 square metre bathroom in Bakırköy rebuilt from scratch. Strip-out, waterproofing, tiling, plumbing and fitting took 12 working days in total; they gave the schedule up front and kept to it. Two coats of waterproofing went on the floor and not a drop reached the neighbour below.

What is the difference between a cosmetic refresh and a full renovation?
In a cosmetic refresh the tiles stay in place; the toilet, basin, taps, shower enclosure and cabinet are replaced and the silicone is renewed. In a full renovation the tiles are removed, the floor and walls are re-covered and the sanitaryware is renewed. A full renovation including plumbing adds the replacement of the water and waste pipes, and the drain point can be moved. If the tiles are sound and you like them, a cosmetic refresh makes a big difference; if the pipes are old, skipping the plumbing is a short-term saving.
Can I use the bathroom during the renovation?
In a home with a single bathroom, the bathroom cannot be used for the whole of a full renovation; you cannot step on the screed and waterproofing while they cure. In a cosmetic refresh the tradesperson can usually make the toilet and basin temporarily usable in the evenings; discuss this at the outset. Some families stay with relatives during these days or time the job to coincide with a holiday. In a home with two bathrooms, life carries on if they are done one after the other.
Bath or shower, when do I need to decide?
Before the plumbing stage. The drain point, the tap outlet and the waterproofing of the shower area are planned around this decision; changing it after the screed is laid means opening up the tiles again. In small bathrooms a shower enclosure frees up space; homes with elderly people or children may want a bath or a seating bench. If you want a concealed tap set, say so at the same time; it is set into the wall and cannot be added later.
Do I need permission from the building for rubble and noise?
Written permission may not be compulsory, but the management does need to be informed; many complexes set a time window for renovation work and limit the days for rubble removal. Carrying rubble in the lift may not be allowed; in that case bringing the rubble down the stairs means extra labour. If the shared plumbing riser is going to be touched, the management and, if necessary, the neighbour below should know. Discussing these with the tradesperson at the quote stage prevents surprises.
