About Parquet Flooring
What it covers, what sets the price
Parquet flooring is one of the investments that changes the look of a home fastest and is used the longest. Laminate, engineered wood and solid parquet are three different levels of the same job; though they look alike, their durability, sound, behaviour with moisture and prices differ. The invisible part of the labour is the floor: parquet laid over an uneven screed creaks, its locking joints open up and it leaves gaps at the skirting. In Turkey labour is priced per square metre; screed correction, removal of the old floor, trimming door bottoms and skirting are usually separate items. On this page we explain parquet types and wear classes, how the laying is done step by step, floor preparation, common mistakes and care after handover. Common questions about Parquet Flooring
Laminate, engineered wood or solid?
Laminate consists of a printed pattern layer on a fibreboard core; it is economical, scratch-resistant and quick to lay with a click system. Engineered wood carries a real wood veneer on top and a multi-layer core underneath; it gives the warmth of wood, can be sanded and refinished and costs more. Solid parquet is entirely wood, lasts the longest, but is affected by moisture and demands skill. Depending on budget and how heavily the floor is used, most homes settle on laminate or engineered wood.
What do AC3 and AC4 mean?
It is the wear class of laminate parquet; the higher the number, the more resistant the surface is to impact and scratching. AC3 is designed for normal residential use; it is enough for bedrooms and living rooms. AC4 is for heavy residential and light commercial use; it gives a long life in hallways, kitchens and homes with children. AC5 is for offices and shops and is usually unnecessary in a home. Thickness is a separate measure; 8 mm is common, 10 and 12 mm are quieter and sturdier.
Can it be laid over old parquet or ceramic tiles?
If the tiles are sound and flat, a moisture barrier and underlay can be laid directly over them and laminate laid on top; you save on removal and rubble. New laminate over old laminate is not recommended; two floating layers creak. Fitted carpet must always be removed. In every case the floor level rises; door bottoms are trimmed and transition profiles are needed at thresholds. In wet areas and on floors with a moisture problem, the source of the problem must be solved first.
Why does parquet creak and how is it prevented?
Creaking usually comes from the floor not being flat: the parquet flexes over a hollow and the locking joint rubs. The second cause is that no expansion gap was left; the parquet presses against the wall and makes noise under pressure. The third is thin or poor-quality underlay. All of these are prevented during laying: levelling, a gap of eight to ten millimetres along the walls and a suitable underlay. Fixing it afterwards means lifting the parquet.
