About Shower Enclosure

What it covers, what sets the price

A shower enclosure separates the shower area of the bathroom with glass and profiles and stops water spreading across the bathroom; it is the change most often wanted when switching from a bath to a shower. There are three basic types: corner enclosure, alcove enclosure and made-to-measure production. The glass thickness, whether it is tempered, the quality of the profiles and hinges and the levelling of the installation determine the life of the job. Made-to-measure enclosures are produced after measuring; production usually takes five to ten days and should be planned ahead in the bathroom renovation schedule. Questions such as whether there is a shower tray, whether the floor fall is right and whether the wall is plumb must be answered before installation; watertightness depends on these details as much as on the glass. On this page we explain the enclosure types, the glass and profile options, how the installation is done, common problems, what to ask at the site visit and limescale and cleaning care. If the tiles are being renewed, the measurements should be taken after the tiling is finished; the tile thickness changes the measurements, even if only by a few millimetres. Ranges are estimates based on 2026 market research.

SCOPEWhat the job includes

  • On-site measuring and type recommendation (corner, alcove, made to measure)
  • Tempered glass production: 6 mm clear or 8 mm, frosted or patterned
  • Aluminium profiles, hinges, handle and sliding mechanism
  • Installation on a shower tray or directly on the floor without a tray
  • Watertight seals and silicone
  • Removal of the old enclosure or bath

SITE VISITWhen choosing a tradesperson and at the site visit

  1. 01Have it written into the quote that the glass is tempered, and its thickness; tempered glass breaks into small granules.
  2. 02For a hinged door, measure whether there is room in the bathroom for it to swing open; in a narrow bathroom a sliding system is more suitable.
  3. 03If no shower tray is to be used, have it checked before installation that the floor falls towards the drain.
  4. 04In older bathrooms where the wall is not plumb, ask about the profile compensation and the extra seal.
  5. 05Do not shower for a day after the silicone is applied; water too soon spoils the curing and it leaks.

Frequently asked questions

Common questions about Shower Enclosure

What is the difference between corner, alcove and made-to-measure enclosures?

A corner enclosure is fitted in an open corner between two walls; it consists of two glass sides and a door, and is the most common type. An alcove enclosure is fitted with a single door or sliding system into a recess enclosed by walls on three sides; less glass, a better price. A made-to-measure enclosure is produced to size for spaces that do not fit standard dimensions, with sloping ceilings, or that are wide or narrow; it is the most flexible and the most expensive option. The layout and space of the bathroom determine the type; the installer recommends at the site visit.

Six mm or eight mm glass?

Six mm tempered glass is enough for most homes; it is light, does not strain the hinges and is more economical. Eight mm glass feels sturdier and heavier; it is preferred for wide doors, frameless systems and heavily used bathrooms, and the hinges and wall fixings need to be stronger. Frosted and patterned glass provides privacy and hides limescale marks. In every case the glass must be tempered; ordinary glass is dangerous when it breaks.

Is a shower tray essential?

No. A tray keeps the water inside the enclosure, solves the floor fall problem and makes installation easier; but it adds height and can yellow over time. In a trayless installation the enclosure sits directly on the floor; a waterproofed, tiled floor with a fall towards the drain is required. If there is no fall, the water flows out of the enclosure. For an elderly person or someone with limited mobility, a trayless, step-free enclosure is safer. Show the condition of the floor to the installer at the site visit.

The enclosure is leaking water; what could the cause be?

Usually one of three causes: the seal (the water-stop strip) is worn or fitted wrongly, the silicone has come away, or the door adjustment has shifted and the glass no longer sits properly against the wall. In a trayless installation, if the floor fall is wrong, water collects outside the enclosure. Renewing the seal and silicone is a small job; a fall problem is a tiling and screed job. Taking a photograph showing where the leak is and sending it to the installer speeds up the diagnosis.
