About Garden Landscaping

What it covers, what sets the price

Garden landscaping is a broad job stretching from the maintenance and tidying of an existing garden to the landscaping of an empty plot from scratch. The price is determined by the size of the area, the scope (maintenance or re-landscaping), the soil and drainage condition, the lawn type (turf or seed), the choice of plants, the irrigation system and the hard landscaping (paths, terrace, fencing, lighting). The season matters too: spring and autumn are suitable for planting, while in midsummer new lawn and saplings struggle to take. In housing complexes and apartment gardens, common area rules and management approval come into play. A garden is not a job done once and left; the first season's care determines the result. On this page we explain how the job proceeds step by step, soil and drainage preparation, choosing lawn and plants, the irrigation system, common mistakes, what to ask at the site visit and first-season care. Ranges are estimates based on 2026 market research; the exact figure becomes clear once the area is seen at the site visit.

SCOPEWhat the job includes

  • Site visit, measuring and landscape plan (simple drawing)
  • Soil preparation: clearing, excavation, drainage and spreading topsoil
  • Laying turf or sowing seed, edging
  • Planting trees, shrubs, hedging plants and seasonal flowers
  • Installing an automatic or drip irrigation system
  • Hard landscaping: paths, stone paving, terrace, fencing and lighting
  • Pruning, lawn renewal and general maintenance in an existing garden

SITE VISITWhen choosing a tradesperson and at the site visit

  1. 01Name the scope: maintenance and tidying, or re-landscaping. Quotes can only be compared within the same scope.
  2. 02Discuss the soil and drainage at the site visit; turf laid on waterlogged ground rots, and drainage is the unseen but decisive item.
  3. 03Plan planting for spring or autumn; in midsummer new lawn and saplings struggle to take.
  4. 04Ask for a plant list suited to the region's climate and how much sun the garden gets; not every plant lives everywhere.
  5. 05Ask for the first-season care plan (watering, mowing, feeding) in writing; the garden does not end at handover.

Frequently asked questions

Common questions about Garden Landscaping

Turf or seed?

Turf is ready-grown lawn laid in rolls; it gives a green garden within a few days, needs heavy watering in the first weeks and costs more. Sowing seed is far more economical, but the lawn takes six to ten weeks to establish, cannot be walked on during that time and has weed and bird problems. Turf for a quick result and little waiting, seed for a large area and a tight budget is reasonable. In both cases soil preparation and drainage matter equally.

Is an automatic irrigation system necessary?

For a lawn area over fifty square metres and gardens where there is no one to water regularly, yes; a system with a timer waters in the early morning and uses water efficiently. Sprinklers suit lawns, drip irrigation suits rows of shrubs and trees. The system is installed during soil preparation, before the turf is laid; adding it later damages the lawn. In a small garden a hose and a simple timer may be enough; show the landscaper the area.

In which season should the garden be done?

For planting and lawn, spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) are the best periods; the soil is warm, rainfall is regular and the plants are not stressed. In midsummer new lawn and saplings struggle to take despite heavy watering; hard landscaping (stone, terrace, fencing) is done comfortably in summer. In winter, if the ground is not frozen, preparation and hard landscaping continue and planting is left until spring. Autumn planting roots in by spring and copes better with the summer.

Can I landscape my own section of the garden in a housing complex?

If there is a garden use allocated to you in the title deed or the management plan, yes, but most complexes set rules on plant species, fence height, the proportion of hard surfaces and tree planting. Installations that spill into the common area or change the appearance need management approval. Trees that will shade the neighbour and fences planted on the boundary cause disputes later. Ask the management for the written rules before the site visit and have the plan drawn up accordingly.
